The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank built by the German company Krauss-Maffei-Wegmann. It first entered service in 1979. Its different versions have served in the armed forces of Germany and ten other European countries, as well as non-European countries. The Leopard 2A6 includes a longer L55 gun, an auxiliary engine, improved mine protection and an air-conditioning system. The German Army is upgrading 225 2A5 tanks to 2A6 configuration, the first of which was delivered in March 2001. The Leopard 2 first saw combat in Kosovo with the German Army and has also seen action in Afghanistan with the Danish and Canadian ISAF forces. |
